Meet the Speakers Joining Us in 2024
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Amy Bucher, Ph.D
Amy Bucher, Ph.D., is Chief Behavioral Officer and co-director of the Behavioral Reinforcement Learning Lab (BReLL) at Lirio, Inc. At Lirio, Dr. Bucher’s team focuses on designing Precision Nudging interventions using reinforcement learning, a type of artificial intelligence, to personalize the delivery of nudges that encourage healthcare behaviors such as cancer screenings, vaccinations, medication adherence, and chronic condition management. Dr. Bucher has recent peer-reviewed publications evaluating outcomes associated with Precision Nudging for mammography, economic impact models for primary care for people with diabetes, and consumer reactions to text message outreach for COVID-19 vaccination.
Dr. Bucher is the author of Engaged: Designing for Behavior Change published by Rosenfeld Media and named a Kirkus favorite indie book of 2020. Prior to joining Lirio, Dr. Bucher was Vice President of Behavior Change Design at Mad*Pow, a strategic design consultancy, and has also worked at CVS Health in their Digital Innovation Lab and as a member of the Behavioral Science team at Johnson & Johnson. Dr. Bucher is an active member of the Society for Behavioral Medicine and serves on their Industry Connections Committee facilitating collaborations with academic teams. Dr. Bucher earned her PhD and MA in Organizational Psychology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and her AB magna cum laude in Psychology from Harvard University.
Leora Horwitz, MD, MHS
Dr. Horwitz is director of the Center for Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Science at NYU Langone Health and leads its Rapid Randomized Controlled Trial Laboratory. She also serves as Director of the Division of Healthcare Delivery Science in the Department of Population Health at NYU School of Medicine, a tenured professor of population health and medicine, and a practicing internist. Her work focuses on improving the safety and quality of healthcare delivery. Under her leadership, the Rapid Randomized Control Laboratory uses rapid-cycle randomized trials to test simple, pragmatic ideas that can quickly improve healthcare practice and be scaled nationally. It is one of the first centers in the country to apply rapid RCT methodologies within a health system and has conducted over 20 trials to date.
Dr. Horwitz also is a principal investigator on several major research and training grants from the NIH and AHRQ. She has been recognized with several prestigious awards. Dr. Horwitz received her undergraduate degree in Social Studies from Harvard and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. What is the Nudges in Health Care Symposium?
The Penn Medicine Nudges in Health Care Symposium is an event focused on exploring the application of behavioral economics principles and nudges in health care settings. It aims to bring together experts, researchers, clinicians, and policymakers to discuss the use of nudges to improve health care outcomes.
What are nudges in health care?
Nudges are interventions designed to influence people’s behavior in predictable ways without restricting their choices. In health care, nudges can be used to encourage healthier behaviors, improve patient compliance, streamline clinical processes, and enhance decision-making.
Will the symposium be recorded or livestreamed for those unable to attend in person?
The event will not be live-streamed. However, the symposium sessions will be recorded and made available on the Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation website after the event. Participants should check the symposium web page or contact the organizers for more details.
Is there a cost to attend the Penn Medicine Nudges in Health Care Symposium?
Details about registration fees and any associated costs will be posted on this web page and the Eventbrite registration page.
